The Perth International Arts Festival 2014 Schedule

The 2014 Perth International Arts Festival is about to begin! This year there are a lot of exciting performances, though sadly not a very large number of classical music concerts (just 8!!) and confusingly (and disappointingly) a large proportion of Australian and West Australian performers. The clear highlight of the season is the Academy of St Martin in the Fields with Michael Barenboim, who will be performing 2 different programs (see it!!). The ACO with Dawn Upshaw looks good, but in comparison to cabaret sensation Meow Meow who joined them last year, it seems familiar, and a bit ordinary, and the Operatic event of Otello is a combined local and South African production (and Verdi isn’t much to my taste) and the first to be led by new Artistic director Joseph Colenari. What I expect from the PIAF is international acts, and performances that are a little bit more adventurous than the average that gets shown throughout the year, and so I suppose that by comparison past years have seemed richer and more exciting, at least as far as the classical music offerings go.

There are some dance/music acts that look good – Opus is a blend of theater and music and will feature the Debussy string Quartet – and the Batsheva Dance Company are presenting two works – Deca Dance and Sadeh21. The good news is that the theater offerings are very exciting – particularly ‘You Once Said Yes‘ – for a ticket to which (now sold out) I am desperate for.
